Nyirripi School and Community

DETAILS

Nyirripi is a small community of around two hundred people north west of Alice Springs in Walpiri country. It is an important place for Warlpiri people, people came here especially to live closer to their land. It is serviced by a supermarket, health clinic, police station, media centre, an arts centre and a school, amongst others. As an artist, I was employed by Corrugated Iron youth Arts, to develop numeracy and literacy ideas for the transition year children going to school. The earth bag walls were made to improve the visual and tactile experience of the school for the children. The paintings on the walls were done by employed local artists and myself. The musical instruements such as the thong phone and musical fence were conceived and built by Rob Hoad and Kristy Schubert.
